Safe passage in and around the Port of Baltimore is guided by the Harbor Safety and Coordination Committee, which coordinates interagency actions and activities related to navigation, safety, and logistics.
The Port of Baltimore (POB) Harbor Safety and Coordination Committee formed in the 1980s, when the POB was improving its navigation system to accommodate larger cargo vessels. Today, the committee offers a forum to address matters related to the efficiency and safety of the Marine Transportation System associated with the POB and its approaches. Local expertise is provided on such matters as maritime communications, dredging, aids to navigation, maritime traffic management, anchorages, and other related topics dealing with the Upper Chesapeake Bay.
The group meets quarterly in March, June, September and December and is staffed by the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA) and hosted by the Association of Maryland Pilots. The local maritime community is encouraged to participate by presenting new projects, questions or concerns for consideration.
