Baltimore's longshoremen and women are committed to continuing the port's tradition of excellence - a tradition that stretches back through several generations. Baltimore's International Longshoremen's Association and Steamship Trade Association have formed a progressive partnership that enhances Baltimore's competitive position and the skills of our workers.

In today's competitive maritime industry, service dictates where the cargo flows. Baltimore's ILA and STA leadership realize that ports which go the extra mile for the customers receive the extra cargo.

The ability to handle any cargo, any time, in any weather, keeps cargo moving and customers coming back. The contract between the ILA and management assures our continued stability on the waterfront. Baltimore sets the standard for keeping steamship lines on schedule.

  • Unlimited midnight starts allow vessels to work after most ports have closed for the night.
  • Our innovative flex-time policy allows gate complexes at all terminals to operate continuously from 7am to 6pm for receipt and delivery of cargo.
  • One of the nation's most progressive inclement weather policies keeps cargo moving, rain or shine.
  • An unprecedented contract for the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility adjacent to Seagirt allows around-the-clock operation.

As talented as our skilled work forced is, we are working to become even better.

Continuing education for crane operators, computer training and other programs keep our work force up on the latest developments in the industry.

For example, enhanced training for the safe and efficient operation of cargo coming in and out of the Port strengthens Baltimore's reputation as a "quality" Port.

Labor works closely with other members of the port community, discussing mutual concerns with the trucking community, participating in joint marketing calls, and playing an active role in the influential Baltimore Port Alliance.

Further illustrating the cooperative spirit throughout the Port, a one of a kind port-wide initiative know as the Port's Quality Handling Action Team (QCHAT) was implemented. QCHAT is a collaborative team approach to prevent any type of damage to our customers' cargo. The vision of the QCHAT initiative is to "set the standard for global quality and excellence in cargo handling at Maryland's Port of Baltimore." Labor plays a vital role in the success of QCHAT. Members participating in this initiative include representation from the following:

  • Automobile & Ro/Ro Manufacturers
  • Stevedoring Companies
  • Steamship Lines
  • Processors
  • Terminal Operators
